A functional based phonetic units definition for statistical speech recognizers

چکیده

A functional approach to the description of speech in terms of phonemic units is exposed. It is based on a structural analysis of phonetically transcribed and syllabified texts, which tak:es into account the word stress and the syllabic structure of the language. As a consequence, the defined units utilize syllabic microprosodic cues and are present in a limited number of contexts. The method is easily applicable to continuous speech, and substantial improvements in recognizers performance can be expected. Finally, the methodology can be advantageously applied to other speech research areas.

Statistical properties of infant-directed versus adult-directed speech: insights from speech recognition.

Previous studies have shown that infant-directed speech ('motherese') exhibits overemphasized acoustic properties which may facilitate the acquisition of phonetic categories by infant learners. It has been suggested that the use of infant-directed data for training automatic speech recognition systems might also enhance the automatic learning and discrimination of phonetic categories. This stud...

SRI's DECIPHER System

SRI has developed a speaker-independent continuous speech, large vocabulary speech recognition system, DECIPHER, that provides state-of-theart performance on the DARPA standard speakerindependent resource management training and testing materials. SRI's approach is to integrate speech and linguistic knowledge into the HMM framework. This paper describes performance improvements arising from det...

Large Vocabulary Continuous Speech Recognition

Large vocabulary speaker-independent speech recognition systems being capable of recognizing continuous speech based on hidden Markov models are today’s standard. This review introduces the fundamentals of speech and the underlying speech recognition problems. The three classical approaches, i.e., the acoustic-phonetic, the statistical (pattern) recognition and the artificial intelligence appro...

Joint Learning of Phonetic Units and Word Pronunciations for ASR

The creation of a pronunciation lexicon remains the most inefficient process in developing an Automatic Speech Recognizer (ASR). In this paper, we propose an unsupervised alternative – requiring no language-specific knowledge – to the conventional manual approach for creating pronunciation dictionaries. We present a hierarchical Bayesian model, which jointly discovers the phonetic inventory and...

Unit Selection Algorithm Using Bi-grams Model For Corpus-Based Speech Synthesis

In this paper, we present a novel statistical approach to corpus-based speech synthesis. Classically, phonetic information is defined and considered as acoustic reference to be respected. In this way, many studies were elaborated for acoustical unit classification. This type of classification allows separating units according to their symbolic characteristics. Indeed, target cost and concatenat...
